RSPB SANDY LODGE NATURE RESERVE AUGUST 11TH 2009 PART ONE

Filmed and Edited by Zoltrix67
Music (C) Rob Elliott

The RSPB was formed to counter the barbarous trade in plumes for women's hats, a fashion responsible for the destruction of many thousands of egrets, birds of paradise and other species whose plumes had become fashionable in the late Victorian era.

The Lodge nature reserve opened in 1961. The woodland, heath and acid grassland here cover 180 hectares, and are being restored to form the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire.

You can explore this attractive nature reserve along 7.5 km of trails, visit the beautifully managed gardens, or watch woodland birds from the hide. New trails are being opened to reach the Iron Age hill fort on Galley Hill. You can see a wide range of woodland species throughout the year, and spotted flycatchers and hobbies during the summer.
