I don't believe "machine consciousness" is a result of faster processing speed, nor the availability of information. Consciousness is a function of LIFE. Being able to duplicate brain function is an interesting goal, but the belief that a "computer" will suddenly "come to life" (ala Pinocchio) is a giant leap of illogic.
We don't know what "life" (the spark of self-propagation, self-evolving, self-realizing and self- consciousness) is.
We can mimic human behavior, but we can't "turn them on".

@bykask what else could it be though?

Good intro.
That we're making no headway in machine consciousness is good: why would we want our machines to be conscious because that introduces a duty of care?
That artificial intelligence is a distant dream shows how little we know, how meagre our brain power is.

hybrotic machine interface ^_^ machines don't have to be "just machines"

My guess is that machine intelligence is most likely going to come from the result of industries gradually conquering more non-human tasks until they move their way into the more human-like tasks. Although it's very possible, I'm not sure if it's going to come from a single project. I'm guessing that the people who oppose it will likely look at it in the same way as those who oppose cell phones and the internet today. The resistant ideology doesn't have much effect in the grand scheme of things.

I like your take on AI. It's like everyone thinks machines will wake up and take over the world, but it needs something more.
If the goal is an artficial consiousness that has to meet human standards, sure things will take some time for it.
But it wont have to take long if people would approach things in a proper way. The human psyche isnt complex, the brain is a dumb machine existing of various modules of wich each and all are performing their own task individually while collectively it appears to be a single mind advancing in its experience.

Thanks for your response. I found that the programmers and scientist working had a tenancy to view the working of the brain as overly simplified parts, much like you describe. There were many models that were built around assumptions that appeared to not have been questioned, so I wanted to question this and raise the possibility that the human consciousness is more than just the sum of the parts of the brain. Time will tell, I suppose.
