  • A coda to thorkelson's "end of story": we've known since the Vela satellite program back in the sixties that cometary fragments entering the atmosphere explode at an altitude of 15 to 25km. This is too high to fit the airburst model, which requires an explosion at 2 to 5km to account for the devastation on the ground.

  • BTW, anyone interested in the recent announcements of a "solution" to the enduring mystery of Tunguska -- more specifically, the Lake Cheko/Crater buzz from U Bolgona -- might want to take a look at the rebuttal: Go to MySpace dot com slash billdesmedt and check out the "Accidental Author" blog.

  • it was just a comet. end of story. Comets are made of ice vaporising in atmosphere thus leaving no crater, only depositing loads of energy. Sorry to the excited.

  • isnt this the nikola tesla theory where he invented the death ray and sent people out to the north pole 2 test it but set the wrong corodinates so ended up in siberia....

  • everyone dies. everyone is also born(again?).

  • Beats me. It's not my theory in any case.

  • it didnt make a crater because it exploded in the air?? last layer of atmosphere....so wtf?? how is that a fucking theory?? i dont get it

  • Well, there are problems with the airburst theory too, but they'd take up more space than we've got here. Let me refer you instead to the website dedicated to the Vurdalak Conjecture which will give you *all* the science behind it. (YouTube won't let me give the URL, but googling "vurdalak" and "tunguska" will get you there.)

Or, you can enjoy the whole thing (in fictionalized form) as a free podcast at Podiobooks.

    Best,

    Bill

  • Allegedly, most cosmologist agree that it exploded on the last layer of the atmosphere closest to earth. The explosion was most likely caused by the airburst of a large meteoroid or piece of a comet about 20 m (66 ft) in length 5 to 10 kilometers (3--6 mi) above the Earth's surface. therefore: no crater.

  • So where's the crater?
