The Story of BREAKTHROUGH

Many people migrate to Toronto in search of a supportive and LGBTQ-positive community. Traditional settlement services do not always address the unique social needs of LGBTQ newcomers who experience higher rates of isolation. LGBTQ organisations may not always have the capacity or understanding to adequately provide culturally relevant services to LGBTQ newcomers.

A meeting was held in 2009 at The 519 with LGBTQ newcomer volunteers interested in taking an active role in our community. We found that finding a supportive community and making friends was the biggest barrier to settlement, and something we could work together to change.

BREAKTHROUGH was born out of this meeting as an opportunity to facilitate peer-support, social events, education and volunteer opportunities.

BREAKTHROUGH is a peer-driven volunteer network for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) newcomers. We believe that creative social networking and community engagement initiatives lead to personal development, reduced social isolation and access to settlement support.

We organize monthly events at The 519 to bring people together, have fun and share information. We're a network, which means we want everyone to share information about events, services and ideas to build better spaces for LGBTQ newcomers in Toronto.

BREAKTHROUGH comes together the last Friday of every month for events at The 519.
