From KETC, Living St. Louis Producer Jim Kirchherr looks back at what life was like on the home front during WWII. In the 1940's, St. Louis was optimistic that the U.S. would not enter the war. Many volunteered to fulfill their military obligation before the attack on Pearl Harbor, but ended up going overseas when the war began. With so many soldiers heading off to war, this created a skilled labor shortage. Soon, 75% of the factories in St. Louis were producing supplies for the war and cutting back on products for those left back home.
