  • @HuskerFanatic There was so much more drama. An extra inning heartbreaker, career defining clutch performances, and unbelievable chokes. Kent's walkoff, Jim Edmonds picking off flies and knocking balls out, and Tavarez playing chin music with Bagwell and punching the phone.

Dan Miceli haunted my dreams that winter.

  • I"m not an Astros fan but I believe the Stros team of 1998 that won 102 was thier best team and I think the 1980 team that lost to the Phillies in the greatest 5 game series ever was their second best team. Poor JR Richard. You were missing him in that 1980 series. If he doesn't have a stroke you guys probably win it all that year. I think the 04 team was the third best Astros team.

  • @ishmaelvolkoff1 you said it

  • Too bad this didn't make one damn bit of difference.

  • @ishmaelvolkoff1 The 1998 team had one fatal weakness. After the switch hitting Everett and utility man Bill Spiers, that team had no other left handed bats. It was a team that could murder mediocre pitching but going up against dominant right handed pitching in the post season caught up with them against Kevin Brown and San Diego. Most of the Astros teams of that era had that problem. In 04, 05 they has more of a ballence between righties and lefties and had more success.

  • I miss these moments. I wish the astros were still like this

  • in 1998 Biggio had his best season, Bagwell was at top form, Ausmus produced better than in 05, Gutierrez produced more than Everett ever did, and oh lord that outfield. Bell, Alou, and Carl Everett.

05 might have had Pettite and Clemons, but I'll take a producing Hampton, Lima and Reynolds any day. Throw in Randy Johnson for the second half of the seaon and Wagner to close games? 1998 should have been the year.

  • I was at that game and called the shot I said he was due for a big hit look what happen great game

  • Sorry, I just don't know of another way to measure a teams performance other than by their success. This "what if mess" is irrelevant to me. Best performance by the Astros organization was in 2005 when they accomplished winning the national league championship.

  • And in 80 had JR Richard not had a stroke in late July of that year you would have had a pitching staff of Richard, Ryan, Ken Forsch,Joe NIekro,Verne Ruhle. They still took the Phillies to five great games. I'm not taking anything away from the 05 team, just pointing out that the better team doesn't always win.

  • I know. They missed him and Wade Miller in 04 is what I said. They probably would have beat the Cardinals in 04 if they had Pettite.
