@Kaitipoo MacColl was of Scottish parentage but born and raised in England. Shoals of Herring was written after he'd interviewed Sam Larner a Norfolk fisherman and much of the lyric was taken straight from Larner's own words. There is nothing Irish about the song itself other than some Irish singers covered it.

Sorry to disappoint all you Irishmen but this song happens to be English. Ewan McColl wasn't Irish. Yarmouth is not an Irish port.

This is the first Irish song sung by the Clancy's and Tommy Makem that I ever fell in love with. I used to play the record it was on over and over till I practically wore it out. What a great song by such great singers
