  • is it necessary to apply the rosin to both sides?

  • I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. I show you how to apply rosin to the bowhair, what is unclear?

  • i'll clarify. being utterly new to the violin, I wasn't sure if there was any benefit from applying the rosin to, not only the bowhair, but equally the underside of the bowhair. However, I imagine you would've showed this in the video if it was something commonly done, so I'll take it the answer is no. thanks for the video.

  • Ah, think of the hair as a ribbon rather than 200 or so individual hairs, and you only apply rosin to the side of the hair that touches the strings.

  • This is AWSOME, thank you os much for the whole series , i wish if you can add more , like playing pieces or something , I just started with my violin, thanks again =)

  • That's the plan, I'm hoping in a week or so to add a few simple pieces and go from there.

  • Hey there, I just got my new violin today and i cant hear any sound on my violin. Ive been rosining my bow for 10min and still got no sound. How long does it take to rosin a new bow? Ive looked at other videos and no one talk about how long will it take to rosin a new bow, they just say it will take awhile lol. is 10min awhile? =)

  • very nice vid! thanks for posting, and I love your hat! A new englander here thanks you

  • thank you.! YOU SOLVED MY PROBLEM *sniff i bought my violin just yesterday and i didnt know why my violin doesnt make a sound.. I applied rosin many times..but didnt change anything. And that i learned from you that it REALLY NEEDS SOME HEAVY ROSIN-PUTTING.. thank youu.! I'll comment again once my violin makes sound.! ^^

  • I had some of the same troubles and none of the other videos I saw were explaining about the bow tension, and only touching on to rosins to say to be sure to use it. Almost as if they expected a complete beginner to have taken a lesson before...

This is by far the best intro to playing the violin I've seen on youtube yet. Thank you so much to the person who posted this video (and obviously the person who made the vid if they're not the same).

  • Thank you for this video, nobody ever explained this to me :O

  • Thanks a lot mate, you have helped me! I have been having trouble with consistency and the concave surface of the rosin block... :-)

  • You have no idea how much that helped. 1- My bow was bent extremely far, which I didn't realise was damaging my bow. 2- Another video had told me to only run my rosin across the bowhair 2-3 times. They didn't even mention new bows.
