This is Part 2 of a documentary on the burning of Zozobra ('old man gloom'), an 80- year tradition in Santa Fe, NM. Produced by The Santa Fe New Mexican, directed by DL Fitch.
@madeofyucca now prior to the american take over, we were all simply new mexicans, and there was simply new mexican culture, within that you had the various spanish and publoan traditions, togther that made new mexican culture with out taking away from either, but when the usa came it divided everyone, so now we the spanish here, the native americans there, and the anglo over there.
@madeofyucca no they cant, because prior to the spanish coming there was no new mexico, each pueblo was their own culture and nation onto themselves, but what new mexican culture is, is not strictly spanish culture, it is a spanish puebloan culture. dont get caught up in the american myth of the 3 cultures of new meixco nonsense.
@ssszar Lol. Your assumptions about my heritage and philosophy are pretty off. It doesn't really mater though.
But just one question, couldn't the indians claim that their traditions are the only ones that are new mexican? Being as they predate the spanish by a few thousand years (and the spanish predate the anglos by around 300)?
@madeofyucca yes there are many new mexican traditions in the north, but this is not one of them, this is an american tradtion that should not have a place here. whle ours are not the only ones, ours are the only ones that are new mexican, im sure an internationalists like you would have a hard time understanding that this sort of thing dilutes our traditions. americans should have their own traditons, just not in new mexico.
All my doom and gloom just left me but came back when I contemplated my life.
