Our new 0-4-0ST "Stafford" running last Saturday at the club running day. Five drivers had a go (including three "first timers" on the engine), we ran around until late in the afternoon until the barbecue beckoned.
Theoretical tractive effort calculates out at 238 pounds. The latest development of our steam indicator includes a drawbar sensor, so we can compare indicated with drawbar horsepower - when I get a chance, I'll indicate this engine and get an actual value.
The same type of valve has been in service in my Tinkerbell since it was built in 2002 - it's mounted inside the dome on that engine, still steam-tight.
we use ball valve regulators in our locos at the great cockcrow railway and we run on a commerical basis, so I wouldn't worry at all. Its never happened to us.
What is the tractive effort for one of these locos?
