This is an original news footage documenting the Binary Industries fire that occured on 25 August 2005 in the Narangba Industrial Estate in Narangba, Queensland, Australia.

This was a fire at a chemical factory that manufactured pesticides, herbicides and range of other toxins and poisons, such as Copper Chrome Arsenate (CCA). A vast amount of the runoff from firefighting water contained a chemical cocktail that completely destroyed the ecology of the local creek, contaminated the land within and immediately surrounding the chemical factory and pouring vast plumes of suffocating chemical smoke into the surrounbding area.

The fire had intense explosions producing the mushroom clouds seen in the video that helped propel the toxic smoke even futher than a typical fire.

The other contraversy surrounding the Binary Industries fires is the fact that it was owned by a man who, at the time, was the Labor Party Member for Kallangur. The ownership was through his family trust (Hamcor Pty Ltd) and the co-owner was this Labor Party members' campaign manager.

They escaped having to pay the $30million dollar cleanup bill, despite having sold the land for $5million after the Queensland Government paid to have it decontaminated with the owners contributing a pathetic $2.5 million. Given the variety of non-complaince matters that led to the fire and the ensuing pollution, they should have been stripped of all assets, including their chemical manufacturing plant in Western Australia (now operated by an offshoot company Grass Valley Formuklators) that, as luck would have it, was subject to a large fire in March 2009 that appears to have been caused by the same type of ignition source.

The local creek is still lifeless and the Queensland Government maintain that there were no long term health impacts by either the Binary Industries fire, the Zelam Australasia fire (16 December 2006) and the Tasman Sheepskin Tannery fire in April 2008 (caught fire while being inspected by government officers). The government also maintain there are no ongoing health issues presented by this string of fires or the concentration of hazardous, noxious and offensive industries operating in the estate.

The local and state government are now processing the licence application for a far larger pesticide and herbicide manufacturer (owned by a Chinese company) to store over ten times the amount of flammable liquids that caused the intense fire and mushroom clouds in the Binary Industries fire. NOW HERE'S THE FUNNY PART - they are going to put this directly opposite a gamma radiation plant that has 350 rods of cobalt 60!!!!!

The other funny part is that this larger company was caught in April 2008 holding MORE THAN TEN TIMES ITS LICENSED QUANTITIES OF THESE HIGHLY VOLATILE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS (that's in the order of a third of a million litres)!!!!! And the regulators gave them a licence capacity increase and are still processing this new application despite prosecution proceedings for the massive licence breach not being finalised.

This just demonstrates beyond all reasonable doubt that the Queensland Government and the Moreton Bay Regional Council are run by a tight-knit bunch of psychologically-deranged lunatics who have no respect or consideration for people, property or the environment (this is actually the stated intent of the Dangerous Goods Safety Management Act!).

Is it just us, or does it appear that the regulatory bodies are not learning from the lessons of the past and are simply lining up an impending disaster.
