Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world. Most of the population have no electricity, and small rural villages are unlikely to join the national grid in the foreseeable future.

In response, German aid worker Andy Schroeter set up Sunlabob, a company which provides commercially viable renewable energy solutions, successfully initiating a rental service for energy systems that allows households in remote villages to afford electricity. Thousands of people in Laos are now able to improve their lives and boost earnings because they can continue working even after nightfall. The initiative has also attracted interest in Africa.
