I had to use a scraper to remove the oil from the base pan of a customers car at my Dad's garage. I asked her when was the last time you changed or checked your oil. Her response "I didn't know you had to!"

Adding 90 weight gear oil to the engine oil is an old trick to quiet down a worn engine. That might be why the sludge also smells like gear oil.
