A new consumer protection agency cleared a major legislative hurdle today when the House Financial Services Committee approved its version of the bill. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would place oversight of credit cards, mortgages and other financial products with a single new regulator. The proposal, a keystone of President Obamas financial reform agenda, faces fierce opposition from Republicans and the financial services industry and must still clear the Senate.
