I've gotten to the part where I put in the disk and my iMac restarts, but all I'm getting is a black screen with a large blinking cursor. Did I do something wrong or do I need to just wait?

Can anyone tell me if is it possible to install this in an external hard drive or a USB stick. Similar process like installing Snow Leopard from a USB stick or an external hard drive.

Does anyone know if it will work?
