Friends or lovers? Well, it is CLAMP afterall, and they've all but written it out in the series, so its more likely than not that they'll wind up being lovers.

But really, just guessing by the end of the series (which I heard will be coming to an end soon) I think that if Watanuki winds up dying he'll be with Zashiki Warashi, if he is alive, then he'll be with Domeki. They probably won't put him romantically outright with anyone, but I think whoever he's with will be his "significant other".
