Amnesty International and Annie Lennox
Launch The Amnesty Arts Fund

Thursday 25th September , 2008
The Twentieth Century Theatre, London

The launch, hosted by Annie Lennox, will present Amnesty's work in the arts to key members of the creative industries, high profile Amnesty International supporters and major donors.

Confirmed attendees include: Martha Lane Fox, Anton and Lisa Bilton, Nick Broomfield, Laura Bailey, Mariella Frostrup, Archie Panjabi, Erin O Connor, Kelly Hoppen.

Founding members of the Amnesty Arts Fund include Sir Elton John and David Furnish, Nicolas Cage, Martin McDonagh, Betty Jackson, Philip Noyce and Terry Jones.

The Amnesty Arts Fund brings together people who believe passionately in freedom of expression and projects, which have the potential to reach new audiences and inspire creative activism around the world.

Amnesty International has a long and proud tradition of working with creative industries and individuals to raise awareness for human rights issues across the globe. This work has inspired change, action and momentum throughout the audiences which have been reached. The launch event will celebrate past, current and future creative projects and creative activism.

Annie Lennox commented: "Arts and artists have the unique power to bring people together and inspire positive action. The Amnesty Arts Fund recognises that power and uses it to call for change."

The Amnesty Arts Fund will provide essential resources and funding to creative projects across the arts including; film, photography, music, fashion, art, comedy, theatre and literature. The Amnesty Arts Fund will support creative projects and individuals to ensure that the human stories behind the statistics and reports of global human rights violations are understood and brought further into the public consciousness.

Chloe Baird-Murray Creative Relationships Manager for Amnesty International commented: Amnesty International recognises that under oppressive regimes it is often the creatively outspoken who are the first to suffer, the first to be silenced, as freedom of expression is curtailed and dissenters imprisoned.

An excellent concept. Artists are among THE most powerful voices that can espouse any cause. I look forward to seeing this become a new force for freedom and justice in the world.

  • as a 56 yr old activist in human rights for all, i'm with you all the way.

  • vc e dimaisssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • beautifull hands and beautifull character i hope i ever met someone in my life who is just like you but perhaps there is no one like you or else it's a miracle, even more than a miracle

  • Annie, you have changed many many peoples lives too :)

  • The days ahead will be very trying, but not so much in the wealthier nations as it will be in the impoverished ones. 3 Billion people will be at risk of starvation unless we pull together as a World United. When the economic monster that was created over the last 2 centuries comes to a halt, the ground will still be fertile, hands will still be able to dig, plant seeds, and draw water. We have an opportunity to make a difference...the time is now...the World is ready.

    Peace!

    Stewart
