This sequence shows a timelaspe video of 3000 particles produced in a collision between lead nuclie at the Large Hadron Collider yesterday. The collision energy of 574 TeV is 14 times the highest energies ever produced before in a controlled experiment. The charged particles are tracked as they radiate from the collision point at nearly the speed of light. As they enter the outer sections of the ALICE detector they are bent by powerful magnetic fields so that their energy can be measured.

The original collision forms a hot quark gluon plasma at millions of degrees Kelvin in a ball the size of the nucleus. The image in the video is about 10 meters across.
