Some of the best action of one of my favorite railfanning days of all time is seen here as the classic sound of jointed rail blends with that of growling EMD 645s.

Train #9: CP 499 WB manifest, 1:31 PM
CP 6001 (SD40-2)
CP 5963 (SD40-2)

The third manifest of the day with an all-EMD lashup! Listen to those dynamics whine as the train slows to stop in the yard.

Train #10: CP 280 EB manifest, 1:54 PM
CP 8798 (ES44AC)
CP 9588 (AC4400CW)
SOO 6027 (SD60)
CP 8540 (AC4400CW)

SD60 #4 (5 if you count 6058, the SD60M) for the day!

Train #11: CP 398 EB unit grain, 2:15 PM
CP 9678 (AC4400CW)
CP 9723 (AC4400CW)

I had just made it back to the Boeck Rd. crossing on the west side of town when I heard the MP 183 detector give a readout for this train, so I knew I had to set up fast!

A green approach-lit signal to my west told me I should stick around after 398 cleared, and sure enough, we get another look at 499 (or "CP 6001 West"), as the twin EMD 645s throttle up on their way out of town.

I hurried back to the other side of town, as 398's departure from the yard held up the returning Madison branch line local long enough for me to catch it...

Train #12: CP G64 Madison local, 2:50 PM
SOO 4411 (GP38-2)
CP 4437 (GP38-2)

This is the train that takes the branch line and interchanges with the WSOR at Madison. I had just missed them on their outbound trip in the morning. The branch, or "M&P Subdivision" runs alongside the main for the last mile or two before rejoining it at "Portage Junction."

Train #13: CP 487 WB manifest, 3:45 PM
CITX 3065 (SD40-2)
DME 6078 (SD40-2)
DME 6201 "City of Ft. Pierre" (SD40-2)

This was what I had been waiting for all day! This very colorful lashup had been parked on the Portage East Siding (just east of Portage Jct.) all day. A crew finally got on board and turned on the headlight and ditchlights, but it took another half hour before they finally got moving! Their count as reported to the dispatcher was 112 empties, 18 loads.

This is the first time I've ever gotten a video of a standard cab lease unit leading a CP train, something I've wanted to do for a very long time!

  • I have the CP Rail Hamilton sub runniing through about a mile from my house in Welland Ontario on the way to Buffalo NY, I see a lot of cool power too . I never thought i would be saying i starting to miss the SD40-2's.

  • Some of those soo hoppers are pooched !

  • @GenesisSanctuary The problem is now that no Soo engine has a different horn; they all have the same one. They used to have a variety of horns you could find nowhere else. Not anymore. But the locomotives themselves look classic.

  • Great way to start off.

  • @Trainmasterkreks Nope, there was no train lol....just engines, but yes long hood forward..

  • @Starrywarz so they were leading a train Long hood Forward?

  • @ 5pm (4/24/10) CP Powerhaul through Watertown, idk the technical name for them, but it was the CP "big engines" two of them both in reverse flooring it towards milwaukee.lol

  • Great consists.
