Highlights of the highly anticipated matchup in the 1996 Eastern Final between the 1994 and 1995 AA state champions. This "Battle of Regional Pride", between the Coal Region and Midstate was talked about since double sessions. A newspaper article published by a Harrisburg Patriot sportswriter the weekend prior to the game inflamed Mt. Carmel Area and the entire coal region who seemed to be at the game to support the Tornadoes. The Bishop McDevitt Crusaders arrived in Shamokin and were greeted by a very hostile crowd. MCA started the scoring on the 3rd play from scrimmage when Vic Kornaski hit Brett Veach for an electrifying 65 yd TD down the sideline. MCA put up 18 pts in the 1st half while holding McDevitt to a total of 0 first downs, 0 yds rushing and 11 yds passing. McDevitt scored in the 2nd half and had one other opportunity but was stuffed on a 4th and goal from the 1 by Joe Costello and an inspired MCA defense. The Red Tornadoes went on to win the game 18-7 and the following week won their 2nd state championship.
