Moszkowski's early set of five Spanish Dances are (perhaps with 'Etincelles') his most popular pieces. They were written for piano duet, and if you go to any talent contest or competitive music festival at which aspiring piano duettists are performing - in the UK at least - you are almost certain to hear one or more of them. I have accompanied the second of the two dances in this video in arrangements for (separately) violin and clarinet with piano. This version for piano solo is by one Albert Ulrich (1855-1921) - who also made a solo arrangement of the walzes op. 8. It retains much of what is heard in the duet version - at the expense of giving the pianist some challenges in articulating the notes.

  • enjoy ur performance! love it love it~

have u ever played the op12, no5. try that one. must be cool~

  • I have played them all - but I don't think No. 5 sounds that good on my piano - I tend to avoid pieces with rapid repeating chords as the action is just a little tight. Glad you enjoyed this vid tho'.

  • I have already played both dances, but your performace is much better... real pleasure to listen:) Britais got a lot of talent ;) Greetings from Poland ;)

  • Thank you for your kind comment - I'm glad you enjoyed my video. Britain has got a lot of talent - but we never produced a piano composer as good as Chopin!

  • Thanks for that. The pieces look straightforward at first sight, but some of the stretches within the octave are difficult and I have to spread some chords to project the important notes!

  • Charming pieces, and if I would have closed my eyes - I would think 2 are playing a duet, espec. at the 1st piece and the middle section of the 2nd one.
