There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what actually happened here, so I'll do my best to clear it up: there was a homeless lady in the library who was intoxicated and in general poor condition. Library staff called in the police, who were supposed to assess her condition (and presumably get her out of the library). This kid intervened (repeatedly, according to Emory's press release on the issue). Then he refused to show his ID to the officers—something that all Emory students are required to do when asked by a campus police officer. He was arrested; the homeless lady was TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND NOT ARRESTED.

In other words, the Emory student who was "trying to help a homeless lady" was actually just delaying the medical help she subsequently obtained. This video was filmed as a publicity stunt—one look at the rhetoric on their blog (this is a group of protestors who have been active on Emory campus since last spring) confirms that: http://freestudentsofemory.blogspot.com/

So let's stop calling it a gross violation of human rights and start looking at it as the tremendous, hilarious joke it is, alright?

HE'S NOT RESISTING! HIS BOOKBAG IS HUGE!

EDIT: Apparently somebody made a spoof blog. It's pretty hilarious—check it out http://oppressedstudentsofemory.blogspot.com/

  • Is this supposed to be a joke? Playing music over the actual video isn't a very accurate way to describe what happened.

  • I came to this video from a comment left by the uploader on the original video. Sadly, instead of just stating what he thought or knew happened, he played insulting music, voice changes and star trek screenshots. This makes his point of view obviously biased and therefore void to any free thinking individual. I see this person as one who relies on wit and humor in an adult discussion.

  • @machination2 I'm curious, exactly what "evidence" in the footage contradicts what I said?

  • @CJoMin We'll see the truth of all your claims later. I simply notice that all

are based on your personal testimony, as against the actual evidence

on this footage. Of course, not everyone has the luxury to verify your

claims. This is the internet. I only warn people against believing

    people on their word.

  • @machination2 Intriguing. I never expressed, implicitly or overtly, any hatred against this individual; since you're trying to find something that isn't there, I'll be plain: I have nothing against anyone in the video. Truthfully, the student and the cops were trying to do the same thing - help her.

Evidence? Why don't you go to the cops and ask? They're on duty at the lib every day. I entreat you to actually do what you can to figure out the entire story before presenting inane questions.

  • @CJoMin Have you got evidence? I mean, outside of your personal testimony, and your obvious slant against this particular person.

  • Oh, and I want to add something to this. The intoxicated woman did not go to the library on her own accord. She was found on the ground and in the rain by 2 students who were leaving Starbucks. These 2 students brought her into the library for shelter and asked the cops to handle the issue thereafter. The cops never planned to detain her either for public intoxication or trespassing; the cops were only trying to help the woman, not kick her out.

  • aStrayClay, thank you for this. When I asked the officers for a follow-up story the afternoon after this incident, I heard the same story. For further evidence, I actually saw the medics arrive shortly after the PhD student was arrested. I posted the entire story on my FB, but it doesn't seem many ppl have seen it. I'm glad another student sincerely attempted to find out the truth behind all this. Kudos.

  • this is my favorite video ever

  • @lo9key the video begins after he had already been pestering the officers for several minutes. These people have an agenda; they only released the part of the video that made this look like it was an unfounded arrest, as evidenced by the fact that the title and the description of the original video are both bald-faced lies.
