With relatively few cello concertos prominent in public view, it's difficult to figure out why this one is not more widely heard. Nikolai Miaskovsky (1881-1950) was old-fashioned even in his time, but that hardly matters unless you are a musicologist. This is well-wrought, beautiful music, and it receives a touching, eloquent performance from Rostropovich. He also has the warm support of Malcolm Sargent directing the New Philharmonia Orchestra. This is an old recording (1957) but still sounds very good.
1. Lento ma non troppo (0:07)
2. Allegro vivace (11:05)
Do I hear a tribute to Dvorak at around 12:15 ;D
