As MSHA ultimately determined in its report regarding the Crandall Canyon Disaster, the mine actually was engaged in "retreat mining" at the time of the collapse. In fact, there had been extensive retreat mining in the area. Al Davis, the man standing next to Murray, was the MSHA District Manager at the time of the disaster. He knew that the operator was performing retreat mining, but he never said a word as Murray spread this misinformation. Shame on him.

I work in a Union mine, I would like you to come into my union mine and see one of the safest mines in the U.S. I will show you one of the most productive mines also. I would also like to tell you that there hasn't never been a union death in our mine, There has been a couple of people die that were on the company side, But when you try to change rollers withe the belt running and lose your arm, it's your fault.
