"Lili Marleen"or "Lied eines jungen Wachtpostens" needs no introduction... The song with music by Norbert Schultze and lyrics based on a 1915 poem by Hans Leip was recorded by Lale Andersen on 2 September 1939...
It was virtually the only song of the Second World War that became popular on both sides of the front...

For the long story of "Lili Marleen"

This version by Dorit Talmadge is not yet presented on Youtube. It was recorded for Odeon in 1941 with the orchestra of Helmut Koch.

I was unable to find any information regarding Dorit Talmadge - a singer with rather an exotic name... so feel free to supply info.

The video features 2 pictures of Lale Andersen performing "Lili Marleen" in 1941. These pictures were published in the propaganda magazine "Signal" - January 1942 alongside an article about the song. Also featured is French sheet music of "Lily Marlene" - recorded by Suzy Solidor (for Pathé and not Columbia as mentioned).
The rest of video contains footage of the Second World War : Warsaw - Rotterdam - Battle of Dunkirk - Coventry - London in the Blitz - Hamburg 1943 - D-day in Normandy and the battle of Caen - Battle of Berlin and the ruins of Berlin in 1945.

The linked video is the French song "Le bar de l'escadrille" by Marie-José.

  • Dorit Talmadge wurde am 5. April 1919 in Hamburg geboren.

  • Magnifique chanson ! Merci !!
