One evening a while back an evening Northbound Surfliner experienced a mechanical breakdown in Oceanside, CA. With my camera rolling I filmed a southbound train pull into San Diego at Laurel Street. A few minutes later the crew had unloaded their passengers, switched some stuff around the depot to free the protect motor, tied their train down, then then proceeded north with the protect (unit #450) to rescue the failed train. I raced it up to Sorrento Valley and called it a night.

  • Isn't there a 12 axel minimum for all the grade crossings on the SDNR...

  • @BNSF7508 You can run with less than 12 axles no matter what the instance. Some railroads restrict movements based upon axle count, some don't. SDNR has no restrictions on movements with less than 12 axles aside from the usual Light Power provisions (50 MPH), however BNSF (not SDNR) requires movements with less than 12 axles to provide protection at grade crossings.

  • Yeah, 450! Seems like some of the F59s could use some major overhauls. They seem to blow traction motors left and right.

  • Interesting.
