Thinking back to the old days there was a summer tradition where fresh cucumbers were sliced in a Pyrex dish in a home made brine. Sometimes onions and other vegetables were added. This is an example of the base proportions of ingredients to make day pickles.

I never have but as you see above, CanadianToad says they make a sweet version a little further north of me. I am going to try (attempt) some bread and butter type before long.

:) My momma made these. I grew up looking forward to Saturdays in the summertime when she'd have that square baking dish filled up. She'd put plastic wrap on top to make us stay out until they "set-up". We'd sneak some out during the day and make a mess doing it - dripping on the counter a bit. She didn't hot them up much. Just salt black pepper cucumbers and onions.
