New economic powers India and China are being accused of buying land cheaply, uprooting indigenous communities, and exacerbating a food crisis. Are foreign investors colonising Africa?

The Stream speaks with Indian author Anand Giridharadas, Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director of The Oakland Institute, and Christine L. Adamow, Managing Director of Africa BioFuel, a U.S. company invested in farmland in Kenya and Tanzania.

  • For those interested in learning more: the World Bank hast released a report "Global Rising Interest in Farmland" and a research document "What drives the global land rush?" . Both documents can be downloaded for free on their website

  • Short answer yes. Long answer yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss.

  • The woman supporting biofuels is part of the same problem as the land grabbers. It is foreigners who never ever promote Africans using their land to feed themselves. Instead, growing biofuels or crops for export are always promoted as the solution. Africans are not supposed to grow food directly on large well maintained and supported farms for themselves with the appropriate infrastructure for distribution and storage. All of that is always for cash crops and biofuels. It is a scam.
