I finally understood the whole thing. When I saw the earliest animations of Lupin I thought he looked like a monkey, or a monkey-man, very much like the monkey escort Sun Wukong (Son Goku) in Xi You Ji (Saiyuki in adapted Japanese translation of the popular Chinese tale) - clever, agile, alert and prankish. Little wonder when you see his creator operating under the pen name of Monkey Punch.
