This is Duncan and I showing at the Equine Rescue Fall Classic, held at the beautiful Willow Hill Farm in Montgomery, NY. We were accompanied by Loren and Threez, and I have footage in here of one of their classes. Duncan and I did the 2'9 division and the mini prix (set at 2'9 as well). We placed third, fourth, and fifth in the 2'9 division and fourth in the mini prix. Ribbons were about the farthest thing from my mind; I was thrilled with the amount of energy Duncan was offering me! He was moving out beautifully for most of the courses, and he even offered me a full lead change! Woohoo! You can see that he was a little wired in the schooling ring, but considering the close quarters and how horses were literally jumping next to him, he held his composure very well. In the show ring, he was focused and listening.
He saved me three times during our classes: 1) When we got a little funky getting to that third fence in the second class, I got popped. He could have refused, but he jumped; he could have run off when I tipped forward onto his neck, but he let me readjust myself so we could get back to work. 2 and 3) The footing was a little funky, which Loren warned me about; she'd felt Threez slipping a bit here and there. I didn't notice any trouble until the jumpoff of the mini prix. Twice, Duncan slipped in the footing and somehow managed to keep it together. The first slip was much worse, and he had to kind of half-buck to get his weight back under himself; the second one, my turn was kind of crummy, and the footing was the last straw. Again, he managed to swing his weight back and save us both. That deserved a medal, as far as I'm concerned.
I feel like this was a more consistent performance for us, even though this was a new environment and he was a little nervous about it. He was pretty sure that the people on the hill in folding chairs were really a gallery of carnivorous monsters; when we went out into the show ring to school, he was prancing when we had to pass them. When it came time to start jumping, though, he was focused and ready. He just continues to amaze me with his progress. Thank you Katie for your instruction and assistance, Loren for your company and lending a hand at the end of the day, and Jen for being so supportive and filming!
