The best tool of all time imo would be the hammer, The screwdriver in the 20th century, but my modern choice is the socket ratchet, everything I do uses sockets
I had to think about this one, best tool ever made?........pocket knife, I use mine eveyday. The only time I use Visegrips is when things go to shit, ie. broken taps or stripped nuts.
The old navy hands had a name for the adjustable. To them it was a "shifter". That was acommon name for it when I worked in the naval dockyard.

The Vice-Grip is probably #1 on my list too but don't overlook the basic screwdriver, especially the Phillips screwdriver.

My vote is on channel locks, by far. When ever I start to work on something I always grab my channel locks.

IMHO, right up there with the vice-grips would have to be (at least for me) a pair of 9 inch Channel Lock slip-joint pliers.
