Home made popcorn is a healthy snack that is high in fibre and low in sugar, salt and fat.
High fibre foods are a vital part of a healthy diet. According to the World Health Organisation, getting enough fibre in your diet can help to prevent obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and various cancers. These illnesses have their roots in childhood, and take a lifetime to develop.
Helping children to develop healthy eating habits can help them avoid heart disease and other serious health problems.
Popcorn is a very healthy snack - provided it doesn't have loads of unhealthy stuff added to it! Ready made popcorn often has high levels of unhealthy ingredients and may be unhealthily high in fat, salt or sugar.
Home made popcorn tastes great without any of these cheap added ingredients, and is an ideal snack for the family:
1. Warm the pan, with a thin coating of vegetable oil
2. Add a few kernels, put the lid on and turn up the heat.
3. When they pop, add the rest of the popcorn and turn the heat down for 30 seconds.
4. After 30 seconds, turn up the heat. Let the popping commence.
5. When the popping stops, turn off the heat, add to a bowl and eat.
6. You could keep popcorn made like this for 24 hours in tupperware.
