Following on from doing the epic Genesis Cinema Show with its wonderful 7/4 section a few weeks ago, I was playing around with it as a sort of solo thing, and this is what you get.

It is a bit messy, it speeds up horribly, and frankly, it is a tad boring for most people I suspect. Anyway, there are one or two bits that worked out ok, and so hopefully one or two of you might enjoy it.

The very aware amongst you might notice a section that is stolen from a certain Mr Neil Peart, from Rush (La Villa Strangiata live).

  • How do you count a measure of 7/4, or 7/8

    I know 13/8 ( song like turn it on again,, 1234 1234 12345 , so 7/4 should be 1234567 right? ) but how do you count 7/8? anyone,, please help!!

  • Hello.

    Personally, I don't actually 'count' any of these odd time signatures. I 'feel' the beat.

    It's hard to explain, but I find it much easier to simply drum along to the song, which if it happens to be in 7/8 or 9/8 or whatever, so be it. The drums just have to 'flow' with the music. Obviously this is not always easy to do - the 13/8 of Genesis's Robbery Assault & Battery is horrific to 'feel', but frankly, I defy anyone to actually count to 13!!!!

  • @emiel4sma I find it helps breaking odd times up into twos and threes. like 1212123 for 7 1231231212 for 10, etc. of course you can count in any grouping of twos and threes, these are just some simple ones.

  • @emiel4sma kick on the 1, snare on the "ands", snare also the 4..... here we go  1-2and3-1-2and3-4 :)

  • easy, count 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7, 1 + etc. the slwer the song, the easier to count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 10, 11, 12,13. but faster music should be counted in a not quite doubled system. Also most music in such long meters are really a combination of shorter meters in a cycle and can be counted that way, I'm very much into counting, it makes music much more alive to me to no exactly where each note is.

  • well, i figured it out already, and trying my damnest to make a cool groove in it ( which is pretty hard for a novice like myself ) but thanks for replying anyways !!;)

  • you could count it as 1234567 or if its easyer count it as 1234 123 (one bar of 4/4 and one of 3/4) the top note of the time signature is the number you count to before you start the next bar, the bottom number is the type of note you are counting. eg. 4/4 you count to 4 untill the next bar and you are counting in quater notes (1/4)

  • 7 beats, the 4 or the 8 simply says whether the quarter note or the eighth note gets the beat which you'd only use in reading music.
