Dersu Usala was an ethnic Goldi, also known as the Nanai people in China, where their culture is also affected by modernization, but very well preserved if you compare to the Goldi-Nanai's in Russia. Goldis culture and people are practically extinct in Russia.

Nikolai Apollonovich Baikov (Tiger hunter,lived with japanese in Manchuria until 1945) wrote a lot of natural novels in Manchuria. It is far more excellent than the animal novel of Jack London though it is not famous. Because nature was deeply observed by his hunter's eye in his novel. Understanding to the circulation system of nature is wisdom of Derus. An excellent hunter doesn't crush the system. His book was read widely prewar days in Japan. Perhaps, Kurosawa also read his novel.
