At its most creative, Jamaican music plunders ruthlessly from foreign sources, then transforms the originals so radically that only wisps remain. "Wha She Do Now" was obviously inspired by The Beatles "Don't Let Me Down", which the song's clanging, signature riff drives home. However, this is not a version or variation on that Brit hit, for BB Seaton ignores the Fab Four's chorus entirely, exclusively reworking "Down"s melody, which he subtly remakes as his own. The arrangement is equally inspired, beautifullymelding a thumping reggae rhythm with an effervescent calypso flair, and that splashy Beatles' borrowed riff tossed into the breaks.Overhead, Seaton and his Gaylads are lyrically expanding on the Brit's theme, taking it to the logical conclusion, as indeed the girl has let them down and run off with another man. Seaton bristles with barely suppressed anger, his bandmates bemoaning what she's off doing now. This splendid single from 1969 was overseen by Vincent Chin at Randy's Studio, while the group self-produced a recut later this year.
