3 part series marking the ten-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan, telling the story of the conflict through the words and pictures of the young soldiers themselves

Episode 1 - Ambushed

This opening part of the series tells the story of a close-knit group of friends from 3 Platoon, 1st Battalion Royal Anglian regiment, who were sent to Helmand province in 2007. For most of them it was their first experience of war. The whole tour was filmed on a helmet camera by the platoon's sergeant, who captured the moment when one of his men, 19-year-old Private Chris Gray, was killed in a Taliban ambush. The film explores the effects of his death on both his mates in the platoon and his family back in the UK.

  • wtf?! the point man goes down and another man is left alone in the kill box while the rest of the entire fucking platoon is kicking back, not doing shit! wtf kind of tactic is that?! lay down some covering fire. move forward. engage the enemy. get your casualty out of there and help the other sgt. fucking hell! the only one with my respect is the one sgt. who picked up the gpmg from the casualty and engaged the taliban alone while his boys didn't help. sgt. rambo!

  • It must be terrifying to have to be over there fighting a war against guerilla fighters. Especially when they don't care about who the casualty might be. In Hell and Back Again, a doc about marines fighting in Afghanistan, some of the scariest moments for the soldiers were when someone stepped on an IED and just died in front of them. bit. ly/yYsv5o
