I ran two cycles of Raku through my kiln on sunday. Some hits some misses, and some mistakes. I used recycled paper for the combustable.

This was the first time I fired this gas kiln with pots in it (my first ever firing by my self), I knew I would make some mistakes but did not want to..lol I am open to suggestions on how to best fire this gas kiln for raku and ^10 firings also, how to apply raku glazes and reduction tips too.

I have to get more smaller ware done, I doI have some bigger stuff that can go into bisque this week..

  • I'm not surprised that you are happy with the kiln; great first firing. Some lovely crackle to the glaze.

  • Thanks for the video.

I am going to go with the wax resist. I tried again today with a detail brush and still could not keep it off the edge.

I was hoping to get the tree effect, glad you saw that in it

    Thank you

  • A fantastic first firing. I had the same problem with wiping off the over spill of glaze nomatter how much you wipe it, it still stains bare body I now draw a thick line of wax where i want the glaze to stop it seems to work.Just a simple tip that might help you .Try adding a little copper carbonate it will give you a blue tint and changes to copper red under reduction. I dust copper carbonate using a small cup lawn seive, onto a freshly glazed pot while its still damp . good luck regards

  • What a joy to fire your own wares! Really nice work Mark! Your textured pot almost had me thinking it was a tree branch, love it! Thanks for sharing your journey! Sharon
