10/10 The day after her visit to Children's...she has been fitted with the Pavlik Harness due to hip dysplasia. Her hip socket is very shallow and they want to ensure that it develops normally without dislocation. It is amazing...she is still such a happy baby. Sleeping a lot (probably her way of dealing with any sort of stress she may be feeling!)
UPDATE 6.23.09
Malaina was 6 weeks old when diagnosed and wore the Pavlik Harness from about 8 weeks to 16 weeks. When she went back for a check up she received another ultrasound that indicated a positive report. We eased off using the harness and went for another follow-up visit at 6 months. At this time, she was old enough for an X ray. Unfortunately, this did not turn up good news, as her hip socket was still very shallow. For some reason, though, her hip bone has never dislocated despite this. She was fitted for an abduction brace which she still wears now (she is 11 months). Next month we will go again to Children's Hospital for another X ray to see how the hip is developing. The doctors are not quite clear if the harness and bracing are effective, but statistically it does seem to help if you utilize them. The other option is to wait and have surgery down the line. (Not so favorable!) Though it is uncomfortable and takes a bit to get used to, babies are amazingly resiliant. She is crawling, standing, and beginning to walk with the brace on.

  • Our daughter had to wear a Pavlik for a few months as well. We took her to DuPont Children's Hosp in Wilmington, DE. She's a bit over 7.5 years old now and in gymnastics!! We had Dr. Richard Kruse, he's wonderful! :-)

All the best to you and Malaina!

  • Thank you so much...greatly reassuring!
