@PeinsDisciple I think that they want the ponys to acctually work.Pegasus work with their wings they are like birds if you payed attention to some science classes (not critisising).When you have magic you could just lay back and levitate stuff without breaking a sweat.

Magic likely takes quite a toll on the unicorns. In most if not all universes where magic is present, it takes the same amount of energy to perform a task magically that it would to do so by other means. And since earth ponies don't have magic (with the possible exception of Pinky Pie), they've needed to find their place in the seasonal change. Magic being actively discouraged here is likely merely a result of tradition.

@rin27844 I actually agree with you and I also see that it's the tradition...but I wanted to comment that it may not necessarily be that magic is effortless. Magic doesn't seem to toll on the unicorn ponies...but there's more to is than that. If something is exhausting mentally, it may not be visible, but it still can be a great effort.

But even then, I think that some things just need to be done by hand....err...hoof.
