OLD RAG

Hike Leader: Mano Malayanur
This is perhaps the most famous and spectacular hike in the area. Nine mi\
les with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. Steep trail with lots of roc\
k scrambling and boulder hopping near the summit.
Old Rag Mountain is underlain by Old Rag Granite, named for its ubiquitou\
s exposure on the mountain, formed during the Grenville Orogeny about a b\
illion years ago.
Approximately 700 million years after the Greenville Orogeny, the Iapetu\
s Ocean began to close resulting in the Alleghenian Orogeny when the Old \
Rag Granite and layers of rock deposited upon it where transported westwa\
rd and eventually thrust up over the limestone bed around it, forming Old\
Rag and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Old Rag is a unique destination for rock climbing and hiking in the mid-A\
tlantic region.

@refresh77: This is my secret recipe:
1: Catch all your hike with a GPS, and then download the .GPX file to your computer.
2: I use Garmin Map Source to read the GPX file and adjust waypoint names, parking notes, etc.
3: Load the GPX file into “National Geographic TOPO!”, this program is the one that does the 3D-Fly, it is about $50 bucks.
4: While your map is displayed, click the build 3D profile and then just fly it. Bingo!
