Sigfrid Karg-Elert
Cathedral Windows (op. 106) 1923
(Junior Year Recital)
The first is an expressionist work in a late romantic style by Sigfrid Karg-Elert. It reflects the composer's impression of stained glass cathedral windows in six movements freely based on the foundation of six Gregorian cantus firmi. It's a particularly tricky piece as it calls for the use of as much color and coordination on the organ as is manageable. Generally the work remains reflective and trance-like and should be played as such, ending with a sonorous and jubilant sixth campanile style movement called the Lauda Sion.
