Jack Laugher had a busy Spring Bank holiday this year; he spent all week at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds taking part in British Diving's Elite Junior diving competition.
Elite junior athletes from all over the country and a guest team from the USA were competing for medals - the pinnacle of their sporting year.
Jack's first day started with his favourite event diving from the 7.5M platform. He showed that all his training in preparation for this competition had paid off by winning Gold by a clear 50 points with a total of 354.65.
Thursday bought Jack's 3M springboard competition where he has been undefeated champion for the last three years. The competition states that the divers should complete 5 required (basic) dives and 3 optional (more complicated dives). Jack's second required dive, an inward 1 ½ somersault pike, earnt him straight 9's from the five judges scoring a total of 56.7 points a normal score for the more difficult optional dives! The competition in this event was more fierce but Jack excelled and once again scooped the top position and another gold medal.
Friday bought 2 competitions on the same day. IM springboard and 3M synchro', he paired with another diver from The City of Sheffield diving club. Unfortunately this pairing had only had one session to train together due to injury, all other pairings were from the same club where they have the advantage of having the same training techniques and time to practice but no need to worry, another Gold was on its way. The last competition, 1M springboard is a difficult event for Jack since power and weight is needed to get maximum height from the springboard. Jack's excellent technique and incredible spring helped him and once again he took Gold.
This was a wonderful week for Jack and he would like to thank all the people who supported him in his training, his coach Damian Ball and his PE teacher and mentor from Ripon Grammar School Ashley Casey. His hard work and determination paid off and his dream of competing at the 2012 Olympics is becoming a reality
He is now world junior champion in age group B (14-15) on both 1m and 3m.
