The oboe was invented in France towards the end of the 17th century. It has a narrower bore than the shawm and a smaller reed which the player controls with his lips. The sound is quieter and more refined, and a greater range of notes is available. This fine instrument is one of the earliest English oboes, and was made only a couple of decades after the invention of the oboe. Several present-day makers offer baroque oboes modelled on this instrument. (Rendall Collection, 62).
