@gg11375 -- George Washington signed the Northwest Territory Act in 1789 that banned slavery in the Northeast. He inherited slaves when he was a boy most the slaves (whom Mathews speaks of) were his wifes slaves whom she controlled because of her first husbands estate. He emancipted his slaves.

of all the u.s citizens to own slaves the presidents of the free world owned slaves. george washington, john adams, thomas jefferson, james madison, ulysses s. grant, andrew jackson, john tyler, james polk, and zachary taylor all owned slaves while in office. james buchanan bought slaves but immediately freed them and hired them as servants so its yes and no. those were just the presidents who owned slaves while in office but that's not all presidents who owned slaves.
