Karen Outpost Faces Burmese Attack

Update: the camp featured in this video was attacked by Burmese troops who crossed into Thai territory. Several Karen soldiers were killed and taken prisoner. The Burmese have a policy of killing prisoners.

I just met Nerdah, the commander interview for this report. The camp came under attack on Oct. 3 from the Burmese who came through Thai territory to attack the base from the weakly defended rear, one Karen soldier died, but the base held and the Burmese retreated.

I don't get it, who are these Karen fighters? Why are they fighting the Burmese goverment?

The Karen are a minority ethnic group of about 9 million people. The migrated from Mongolia about a 1,000 years ago and settled in the eastern part of Burma. The Burmese have oppressed and mistreated the Karen for centuries. In 1947, after the country gained independence from Britain, the Karen sought better standing with the government, but the Burmese murdered the Karen leader and this touched off a civil war that rages to this day.

Hi I have been following this fight for about two years now. I am planing to go to thailand in 18-24months with the goal of trying to hook up with the KNLA, I am desprately looking for contacts. how ever im aware this is not something just handed over on the internet.I have some intense training planed for the next 18 months in first aid. will they be willing to accept me if i can prove im not some red neck?
