COURTENAY - Two Comox Valley paramedics are bound for Haiti as part of a rapid assessment team who will lay the ground work for a larger group heading down as early as Monday.
Bill Coltart and Ryan Thorburn will be joined by four other members as they try to determine where their group's efforts can be best utilized. They are members of the Canadian Medical Assistance Team, a volunteer organization made up of doctors, nurses and paramedics from across the country to provide medical assistance after disasters strike.
The group was formed in the early 90's and has been deployed six times in the past five years. When they arrive in Haiti the Canadians will work alongside a British heavy urban rescue team that have the equipment and expertise to pull injured from collapsed buildings but do not have medical training.
The group heading down next week, will bring various medical supplies plus a special mobile field hospital to work out of. Each team member pays their own transportation to Haiti and expect to be volunteering there for at least two weeks.
