Here is my personal feeling: among the Purab gharanas, I find the Banaras style the most uninteresting. It's quite a crude and loud style.
The genuine Punjabi gharana, (NOT represented by Alla Rakha & Zakir Hussain)is crude and strong also, but it's directly derived from Pakhawaj and has the beauty of the resonances, more than Banaras.
Lucknow & Farrukhabad offer more subtilities, they combine the speed of Delhi and resonances of Purab.
