February 18, 1991

Okay, what the heck. The last part of my Universal Monsters Movie Review is taking a bit longer than expected to finish the editing, so here's a bonus episode of MMC Retro for y'all.

This playthrough literally took 18 years to make. Seriously. The original game footage was recorded on VHS in June, 1990 (yes, this footage is the real deal - taken straight off the original 1990 VHS tape which yes, I still have), the intro/outro babbling was from 1991 and 2002, and the voiceover was from 2009. The whole playthrough will be 4 parts, spread over the next month or so with some other random Video Letter bits in between.

For this, the very first video game segments I ever did for my Video Letters to Jason, we take a look at LIFEFORCE for the NES! Lifeforce was an awesome spin-off from the Gradius series adapted from a Japanese arcade shooter called "Salamander." By far my all-time fave 8-bit shooter. Enjoy!

  • nice video, but a little tip, in any future game videos like this with your 2009 self putting commentary on the old stuff. Turn up your voice a little more, sometimes the laserfire in the game drowned you out.

And, so you sent letters to this guy Jason for a long time, but how often did you actually see him? Just curious.

  • Yeah, I know about the audio. You can hear everything well with headphones.

Jason and I would see each other a couple times a year, when I would go back home for holidays, summer, etc.

  • Lifeforce, Pong, Space Invaders > Halo

  • 100% AGREED!

  • I used to do the same thing with my Super Nintendo.

I would record myself playing SNES games on VHS.

  • and he recorded it in SP!!! very hardcore. thats what i do to preserve the quality of the awesome graphics of the game back in the days.

  • thats hardcore!!! lifeforce probably my favorite shooter ever. lol. i like how you said "the best nintendo game i've ever seen" thats what i thought too.

  • I loved the co-op on this game. As a kid I would use every power up immediately just to keep addin speed. It got to be prettty ridiculous but a whole lot of fun!!!

  • this game can be played in an arcade in the mystical ninja for super nintendo...totaly awesome

  • Cool. ^_^

  • Oh & yes it was. one of the all time greats!

  • Wow. February 18th, 1991. That's the day before I was born.

That creeps me out, but is totally awesome.
