I am white, I'll cop to it. And I hate white people. I hate Glenn Beck I hate Rush Limbaugh, I hate O'Reilly, to a much lesser degree I hate Keith Olbermann. I hate George Bush Jr. I hate lots of people, most of them white. I think its possible I'm a racist too.

Could you point out where he derided her? I certainly don't see it in that statement. For someone who ordinarily uses it in the phrase 'ha! typical libs!' I understand that you have a poor grasp on what 'typical' means, but I assure you, it is not derogatory. I'm a typical college student, a typical 19 year old, a typical young male, and a typical Michiganian. Unless it's being used deliberately with malice, typical just means 'ordinary' or 'average'.

You see, this is where context comes into play. If he had said it in a disparaging fashion, then you would have a point, but it was clear from the context that he was not speaking out of malice or ill will towards his grandmother. From the context he was clearly using typical as a synonym for 'ordinary' or 'regular' or 'average'. Quote mining has the unfortunate (though usually completely intended) effect of removing context.

The context he used it in was negative, remember?

He was saying his grandmother would walk to the other side of the street to avoid passing a black person, in other words, she was a racist.

Then he says that is typical for whites.
