UPDATE: Please check out the short film 'Animus' in which the clouds section of this animation is used as the opening shot:

http://youtu.be/evwxm-1Ghgg

This is a pre-viz animation I did for a fantasy short film I made called 'Animus', which involves a tracking shot through clouds which then dips below the clouds to reveal a large city below, tracking over the city to finally pull in on a significant building on a hilltop.

As stated, this is a Pre-Visualisation render and not meant to be considered high quality CGI. The render quality is set at medium. Also, the 'city' is actually only made up of 2 building types cloned about 7000 times and randomly placed. So it is not meant to look like a proper city on close inspection of course, but the whole point of this animation was to get a sense of the colour tone and scale and atmosphere I was going for.

Unfortunately, I was unable to complete the fully-realised scene. My initial ambition was to eventually build an entire, logical city, with every single building being unique and specifically placed, and adding lots of tiny details such as benches, streetlamps and yes, even animated people...

As you can imagine, I eventually accepted that I neither had the talent, processing power, Renderfarm setup, nor time to actually achieve this and the shot in the film ended up being the cloud fly-through only.

Software Used: Vue 6 Infinite
No. of Polygons: 525,609,779
Render Quality: Medium
Build Time: 3+ Hours
Render Time: 3 days!

  • Seems like you slowed the video itself down. the frame rate is sluggish

  • @VengeStudios

Yeah, I did. Otherwise it would have only been a few secons long lol. It took three days to render just 10 secs of footage. If I wanted a slower 2 min long version of the tracking shot, it would have taken WEEKS to render.

  • amazing !! ^^ but how is called the soundtrack that you used for this intro...?? and who is the composer , it's so beautiful! aw* ^^

  • @pex98

The song is called 'None of Your Business' by Choi Seung-hyeon. It is from the soundtrack to the film 'Lady Vengeance', directed by Park Chan-wook.

  • FINALLY!!! SOMEONE HAS ACTUALLY USED VUE PROPERLY!!!!!! Fantastic intro, I'm trying to do a shortish feature film with this software, and this is pretty much how I had visioned it. I plan to start at the bottom of teh scene and go through the clouds and into Space. I love the possibilities of this software

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad you liked it. Keep me updated on your scene/short film, I'd be interested in seeing it. Chris.

  • where did you get the clouds from could you email me them if possible

  • @Windurin Yeah no problem mate, looks fantastic. Well I've tested some scenes out in my Trailer for my film I'm going to make so you can check it out on my channel. It's called Flame Extinction Theatrical Trailer. It's all a bit basic but it was just quickly for a trailer, and I'll be working to every detail on the final shots for the actual film, but check it out and leave a comment :D

  • Thanks. I'm still using Vue 6 at the moment, I only have the Personal Learning Edition of Vue 8. Vue 8 has some great new features, but you still need a lot of processing power to render high-quality scenes.

Vue isn't exactly simple to use, but it's one of the easier 3D packages out there compared to others.
